Jessica Straus is a sculptor from the Boston area. Working primarily in carved and painted wood and incorporating found objects, she explores the poetry of unexpected juxtapositions between recognizable and invented forms. Alternating between narrative and abstraction, Straus's well crafted sculpture is infused with a quirky, yet subtle, humor and a finely tuned sense of aesthetics. Her studio is in the Brickbottom Artists Building in Somerville, MA. Her artwork is represented by the Boston Sculptors Gallery in the SOWA district of Boston.
I've got a lot going on! My solo show opens at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA on Feb 21 and runs through May 16, 2010. In this big, beautiful space I'll be showing work from two series, "Spheres, Spirals, and Spills" (catalog available for $10) and brand new pieces from the "Little Red Dress" series. I had work in the wonderful exhibition "Perfect Fit" that just closed at the Fuller Craft Museum. Next this show travels (May 2010) to the Nicolaysen Museum in Casper Wyoming. This summer I'll be showing several sculptures in the exhibition "Reshaping Reality" at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont. I'll also have work in the Boston Sculptors Gallery "Paper!" exhibition. I'm also happily up to my elbows in maps of France, planning my route for a two week backroads exploration, this April, of outsider art environments--check back in May to hear how that went!
